New editorial data formats to engage novice fans.
UEFA asked us to help develop new formats that leveraged the game data that was being collected but not used. The key twist was that they wanted to engage with novice fans instead of stat-oriented experts.
Trying to avoid complex visualisations, we explored how to humanise the data with natural language output, creating a set of simple sentence structures that could provide a huge variety of outputs.
By creating new ways of organising the match and historical data, we were able to automate the generation of player updates in terms that fans use.
We also developed a variety of modular card formats that could be syndicated across UEFA’s websites and social channels.
In addition to the data formats, we also developed a set of flexible patterns for how they could be deployed across UEFA.com. They continue to be used there and on competition-specific sites like the Champions League.
